How do I delete Google account?

Google, the search engine giant, offers tons of services including email, online document creation, social networking, free blogs etc. All these services are typically managed via a single login (username and password) - that of your Google account. Remember that if you delete the Google account, you shall not be able to access the associated services like Gmail, Google Docs or Blogger. Accounts at these services can also be selectively removed; for step by step instructions please refer how to close a Gmail account or delete a blog at Blogger.

Please note: The process of deleting a Google account requires you to sign in. Having trouble doing that - forgot the username or Gmail password? First try to retrieve the login information. If you cannot do that, I suggest you forget about this account and create a new one using another email address during the sign up process.
Login to your Google account to close it

imageYou first need to login successfully at your Gmail account. Point your browser to the Google accounts home page. Now enter the username and password. You will get to your account profile page. Click on the "Edit" beside the My Products heading.

image
imageYou shall be shown a page that lists some of the Google services/products which you can stop using. However, we need to delete the main account, so move to the last link "Close account and delete all services and info associated with it".

image
The next page lists all the services that will cease to exist for you if the Google account is deleted - make sure you put a checkmark in front of each. You then need to enter the current password of your account and confirm your action of deleting the account. Also put a checkmark in front of "Yes, I acknowledge that I am still responsible..." statement. To complete the process, click on the "Delete Google Account" button.

Congratulations! You've successfully closed the account. Keep in mind that any Gmail, Blogger etc. accounts will also be removed.

How do I create a Google account?

I suppose you already know that it is not necessary to have a Google account to use the Google search engine. So why do you need one? Though Google started off as a search engine company, over the years it has launched tons of services including the famous Gmail email with 1GB storage, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Blog (Blogger), iGoogle, RSS Reader etc. that do require you to create a Google account. The process is quite simple - involves filling up a short online form and we shall go over this in a moment. Also, creating a Google account is 100% free and the same login details can be used to access all the other services including the recently launched Google web pages for personal profiles.
Create a Google account in a couple of minutes

image                              Go to the Google Accounts page at https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount which displays a short form with only 5 fields. All you need to do it enter your existing email address, a password, select your location and check the terms of service.
Don't have an email address yet?

If you don't own an email address yet, I suggest you refer to get Gmail address for step by step instructions. By the way, a Gmail email address is not a prerequisite for a Google Account - any email account will do.

A note on selecting a password
The password is the key to you Google account - you cannot afford to lose it. The password should be easy for you to remember and difficult for others to guess it outright. As you can understand, the names of your spouse or children serve as very bad passwords. Though a mix of upper and lower case letters with numbers and symbols can create a complex password, it might be difficult for you to recall. I strongly advise you to note the password in a safe place and refer to it if you ever forget. You should have no difficulty in remembering it when you've used it for a few times.

Coming back to the Google Account form, select your country of residence and enter the wavy text you see in the field with the small disability icon. Hit the "I accept. Create my account" button when done.

Newly created Google account isn't ready yet!

The process hasn't ended. Your newly created Google account is not yet ready for use. You need to activate it. When you successfully filled and submitted the new account form a message is automatically sent by Google to the email address you had specified. This message contains instructions for Google account activation. Check your email account; remember to also look in the spam and junk email folder because sometimes messages are caught by the spam filter and made to skip the inbox.
image
Found the email? Good.
In it you'll see a link, the first link actually. Click on it to launch your default web browser. By the way, if nothing happens on clicking this link, copy-paste the same in the URL/address field of the web browser. You should now get an "Email address verified" message similar to what you see in the image below. You can now move on to managing your profile and using many of the Google services.

Close and delete Gmail account

Tired of using Gmail? Or finding it inconvenient or time consuming to check emails at different services? You probably have a good reason to close and delete your Gmail account. But before we go through the steps, spend a little more time mulling on this because once deleted, you would not only lose that email address but also all the messages (unless you backup the emails).

FYI, if checking emails at different web based services is cumbersome; you can always have emails from Gmail forwarded to an account that you check more often. For example, all incoming messages at your Gmail account can easily be diverted to your Yahoo! Mail account. This has two benefits - (1) you retain the Gmail email account and (2) you save on time; learn know more about Gmail forwarding options. Also, you can download all Gmail emails to your computer through email programs such as Windows Live Mail or Outlook Express.

Deleting your Gmail account
Though Gmail is a free service from Google, it's still regarded as a "product" by the company. Closing and deleting your account requires you to first log in at the service. Obviously, if you cannot log in successfully, you've lost your account and there is no need to spend time in knowing how to delete it - just forget about it - your account will automatically be removed after a few months of inactivity.

Anyway, once you've logged in at Gmail, click on the Settings link near the top right and go to the Accounts tab and then click on the Google Account settings link - refer image below.
image
A new web browser window or tab would open with your Google Account settings. Under the My Products section, you'll find all the Google products available to you. Click on the Edit link beside the heading - refer image below.
image
Select Gmail to close and delete
You will now be displayed the Google products /services you use. Click on the one you want to delete - refer image below for deleting Gmail accounts.
image
The final step to close and delete your Gmail is providing an alternate email address for your Google account to access other services and products. Make sure you check the Are you sure you want to delete... checkbox and enter your current password.
image
Your Gmail account will be closed in 2 business days and all your messages deleted. You still have a few moments to think about this because there is no turning back once you enter everything correctly and hit the Remove Gmail button.

Google and Adsense

imageWe all have come to love Google's search engine. In the days of "super crowded" search homepages, Google's single field search form was simplicity which we all appreciated. After all, if you want to search for something on the net all what was required was one text field (in which the users typ8ye their search phrase) and a submit button. This idea had not struck other search engines and directories (tongue in cheek remark). All of them had loads and loads of other stuff like banners, news, email account login fields, graphics etc. on the search pages. [And most of them still do!]

In any case, Google's idea of providing a very simple net search interface was a hit. The page had no advertising, just one search text field and a couple of search buttons. More importantly, the search results generated by the Google engine, were as good (if not better) that others. The popularity of Google grew and grew and now it is the most popular search engine on the Internet.

Google also introduced the Image search, Google Groups, Google News (presently in Beta) and Froggle which is a shopping centre (Smart shopping through Google, says the tag-line).

What is Gooogle Adsense?
Adsense is a one of its kind advertisement delivery system of Google. The reason it is so very unique is because Adsense displays ads that are relevant to the web page contents. Any why is this so important?

Consider a web page that has advice on how to make candles (a great hobby for both men and women... very enlightening, trust me!). Now, this page also displays a couple of web banner image ads. One of them is the standard 468x60 pixels banner ads shown at the top of the page, the other is a long skyscraper ad placed on the right side of the page. What are the chances that visitors would see the contents of these ads? Firstly, the 468x60 banner ad displayed on the top-right would most probably be ignored by surfers because of banner blindness (Banner blindness is something that any web surfer who has spent sufficient time on the web has gone through - It's the process by which our brain overlooks the areas in which it knows a banner exists). The seond skyscraper banner might elicit a view from the visitor but the chances of them clicking on either of these banner is very low especially if the banner have nothing to do with candle making.

Again consider the same page in which there are advertisements that:
are relevant to the page contents; that is, banner ads on candle making - web sites from which you can purchase good quality wax or wicks, places from where you can get smooth molds etc.,
appear as part of the web page and do not stand out,
are mostly text and again appear as a part of the web page text.

Now the chances of a visitor clicking on an advertisement increases manifold.
The Google Adsense technology, thus, delivers ads that are relevant, non-obstrusive and seem mingle with web page contents. Also, through Adsense you can have both text and image ads, though the text ads are more common.

The Google Adsense Technology
When it first started, Adsense was available only to a select few. The big shots at Google soon realized that Adsense can be turned into a gold mine if it was opened to all. So you can now go and sign up for a Google Adsense account if you are a publisher of web sites and monetize your it like never before!!!

When you first sign up for an Adsense account, your application and your web site will be reviewed by an employee at Google. They will judge if your web site indeed conforms to the Adsense policies and if it does, you will be sent an email approving your application.

A note to all prospective Adsense publishers: If your web site has good content, provides value to web surfers and conforms to the Adsense policies, it would most probably be accepted in the Adsense program.

Once your application has been accepted, you can go ahead and login at your Adsense account, get the code and embed it on your web pages. Now whenever someone comes to your web page, they would see relevant ads - advertisements that are non-obstrusive and seem to be part of the web page.

How do you get money from Adsense?
A publisher (one who displays ads on his/her web site) can get revenue from Adsense in three primary ways:
        1. Visitor clicks on the ad - The CPC or Cost per Click model
        2. An advertisement is shown on a web page - The CPM or Cost per 1000 impression model
3.Referral program - Promoting Adsense and Adwords

Google as my homepage

How to make Google as my homepage

I use a Dell laptop and whenever I open the browser, it takes me to the company web site. I would like to have Google as my homepage. Could you please tell me how to effect this change?
It's common for companies to set the homepage of the default web browser to the URL of their web sites. And as you probably know the default web browser on the Windows operating system is Internet Explorer. To change the homepage in Internet Explorer you need to modify its settings - read that article for detailed instructions. So, to make Google the homepage in the default browser, all you need to do it tinker a bit with the browser settings (the "Internet Options" section). FYI, some browsers allow you to have more than one URLs as the homepages.

By the way, as far as this article is concerned, the homepage is the page that is displayed when the web browser program is started. (The word homepage is more commonly used when referring to the 'front' page a web site - the page that's shown from the site's domain name).

Below are instructions on how to make Google the homepage in the five popular web browsers.

Internet Explorer
imageClick "Tools" and select "Internet Options". Under the "General" tab, enter the Google's web site address. Alternatively, open the Google web site and hit the "Use current" button. In the latest version of Internet Explorer, you can set many URLs as the homepages.

Firefox
imageOpen the "Options" pop-up by selecting it from the "Tools" menu. Type www.google.com in the Home Page field and click "OK".

Google Chrome
imageClick the wrench icon and select "Options". The second section under the "Basics" tab is one that concerns the browser homepage. Type in www.google.com in the text field.

Apple Safari
imageFrom the "Edit" menu, you have to select "Preferences" and then in the "General" section put the Google web site address in the homepage field.

Opera
imageGo to "Tools" -> "Preferences" -> "General" (tab). Locate the homepage field and enter the Google web address.

An important note for Internet Explorer users: I've come to know that some Internet Explorer users are unable to change the homepage. The problem is generally attributed to spyware/adware/virus, malicious code or a badly written add-on. If you too cannot change the homepage in Internet Explorer, I suggest you read that post for troubleshooting and further help.

Decrease picture size for email

Pictures from a digital camera or scanner are generally very large in both file size and dimensions (width and height) and simply not suited for email and web. For instance, unless you were forwarding the image to a printer, there is no need to send high-quality images to friends and family because not only will the process take a longer time and waste internet bandwidth, the entire picture wouldn't fit on one screen (on most monitors) which results in horizontal and vertical scrolling for the recipient. Thus, if you are in the habit of sharing digital camera photos or scans I strongly recommend learning how to decrease picture size. Some added benefits include increase in productivity, sending more images with one email message and, yes, happy recipients!

Written primarily for the newly initiated, this article addresses some of the different ways with which you can decrease picture size without compromising (much) on quality. For budding web developers, I suggest reading the web graphics section which has full-fledged tutorials on JPG optimization and decreasing the size of Gifs.

Many ways to decrease picture size
There are several different methods you can employ to decrease picture size.
           1. Save pictures with smaller dimensions (decrease the width and height).
           2. Crop out the important part.
           3. Lower the quality for pictures in JPG format or reduce the number of colors for GIFs.

All of above require the use of graphics manipulation software also called image editors and there are tons of such programs available. Depending on your experience with computers and desire to learn, you can use online image editors such as one at Pixlr.com, a standalone program such as Microsoft Paint or even free web based services to which you upload a large picture and get a picture with reduced size. We'll now look into these options in detail.

Pixlr.com editor to reduce size of images

The online free Pixlr.com image editor offers all the basic tools to decrease picture size - resizing, cropping and changing image quality. For step by step instructions, read how to reduce image size with Pixlr.com.

Use Paint on Windows for decreasing picture size
The Microsoft Paint program is the free image editor that comes with the Windows operating system. You can open a large picture in this program and then resize and crop it. Learn how to make photographs smaller for use on email and the web.

Decrease size of pictures with free online services
Use one of these online free services to decrease the size of your pictures:
Free Image Optimizer lets you decrease picture size by resizing, compressing and optimizing. Easy to use service that is also available as a standalone download.
Online Image Optimizer from Dynamic Drive: Enter the URL of the image (if online) or upload a picture from your computer and get a smaller image.
Web Resizer does a decent job of reducing the size of images that you upload to the service.
Shrink Pictures in a few steps: Upload image, specify size, apply a special effect (optional) and select quality.
Reducephoto.com is designed primarily for people who email photographs taken from digital cameras.

Renew email address

I have an email account at Yahoo [deleted email address] which I haven't used for some time. I couldn't access it today and came to know that it has probably been deleted. How can I renew my email address because it has many important messages and photos which I need now? Thanks for your help.
Kelly Hamilton
Just like everything else in life, email addresses too can expire. The lifespan of the email account depends on the service you use. For instance, at the time of writing, Yahoo will automatically delete the free account as well as its contents if you haven't logged in at least once in the past 4 months. This period of inactivity is about 9 months for both Gmail and Hotmail. So if the account has indeed been deleted, can you renew the email address? Read on.

How to renew an email account

renew-email-addressPlease understand that if a free Yahoo! email account has been closed because of inactivity, all messages and other content will be deleted forever. There is no way you can get your hands on these. However, you may be able to renew the email address as long as it's available, i.e., someone else hasn't chosen it.

The process of rejuvenating your email address depends on the service. For example, in Hotmail, you may be able to regain control of your account quickly without filling up the form all over again... you will however, lose all the stored messages.
As far as I know, the only way to renew a Yahoo!Mail email address that has been closed by the service is to sign up for a fresh account, keep your fingers crossed and pray that the old ID is still available.

Get username

Get username of choice for online accounts
Many web sites, such as those offering email or social networking services, can be used only when you sign up for an account. Generally, you are required to choose a username and password when filling up the registration form. Thus, the accessiblity of the account becomes restricted and it is available only through the correct login details. This is what most people want because the account may hold sensitive and personal information.
A username, sometimes also known as a user ID, identifies your account and may also determine the web address of your profile page. Thus, your username is used in the email address (the part before the '@' sign) or in the URL of profile page (for example, http://twitter.com/CHOSEN-USERNAME).

Why is getting a username of choice important?

As mentioned above, the username is an integral part of your online identity be it an email address or a URL of your account. So it is very important to make sincere efforts to get a username of choice and not pick the first one that pops in your head. And this is especially true for businesses and professional organizations.
Please understand that you can get a username only if it's available; i.e. not being used by another member. And since popular online services have millions of subscribers, it may be tough for new registrants to find a username that fits the bill.

Do not pick a suggested username!

In their hurry to have the account up and running, many people who can't get their first few choices, simple pick up a username from one of the suggestions, if offered. Refer image below which is from the Gmail email service. These 'suggested usernames' are generated by programs and based on the information supplied by you - they lack in quality and, if I may say so, personality!
get-username-but-not-suggested

How to get a username you want?

Here are a few tips to help beginners get a good username - one they would cherish for years to come. It would be great if you share some of your thoughts - use the form at the end of the page.
  • Your first aim is to choose a username based on your own name. Obviously, this is easy for people who have uncommon names. Others need to try their luck with different permutations and combinations of their names.
Many times you can use the period, underscore or the hyphen in the username and these characters can help separate the first and last names. For instance, if maheshbiradar is unavailable, check for mahesh-biradar or mahesh.biradar. Also including your middle name / initial in the username may be a good idea.
The same logic applies for people making accounts for online businesses - a username of your company name is the best bet!
  • Is everything lost when you can't get a user ID of your name? Of course not! Here is when you are required to use your brain cells. Don't pick up one of the inane usernames suggested by the service. Rather think what 'fits your personality' or 'describes' you in some fashion. For example, if you are a professional athlete (or going to become one), wouldn't ilovetorun or goforgold be nice usernames for your online identity?
Similarly, the owners of a flower shop in a small town should first try to get their hands on [TOWNNAME]-florist (substitute that with the actual town name) because the residents will find it more personal and easier to recall. A username like USAflorist might not be appropriate for that small shop since it doesn't serve the entire country.
  • Taking the same line of thought forward, make sure the username you choose lasts a long time. For instance, you may love Snow Patrol's songs now; snowpatrolfan would be a really good ID, right? But don't you think your music tastes will change in the next 3-4 years? Take my advice, they certainly will!
  • Unless they are a part of your company / business name, don't use digits (numbers) in the username.
  • The really good usernames are those that people remember and somehow associate with you. I have come across some really catchy usernames. The first one that springs to my mind is stinkydave which was the user ID of one of my clients. No, his name wasn't 'Dave' and he certainly wasn't 'stinky'... but the username is unforgettable. And there is microbekiller used in the email address of a dear friend who is a molecular biologist and specialises in antibiotics research.
Conclusion: No need to lose heart if you don't get a username of your name. There would be plenty of other options available if you spend a little time on this and rack your brains.

Google

nav_logo37Google knows who you are talking to and who your closest associates are. And if Gmail and Google Talk were not enough, because of Orkut, Google knows who sits in your circle of friends. Thanks to Google Search, Google knows what you are searching for on the Web, including the news, type of images and newsgroup access. Thanks to Google Video, Google knows what kind of risqué videos you like to watch. Thanks to Google Finance, Google knows what stocks and businesses you are interested in. Thanks to Blogger, Google knows what you rant about and what rants you like reading. Thanks to Google Maps, Google knows where your house is and where you are going. Thanks to Google Calendar, Google knows who you are meeting with, where you are going, and what you are busy doing. Thanks to Picasa, Google even knows what you, your family, and your best friends look like. Best of all, thanks to Google Desktop, Google has access to all your documents, images, files, and everything else on your hard drive. And when Google displays customised adverts based on the e-mails you receive and searches you make, and you happen to click one of them, Google knows the kind of things you are interested in

Keep email private

Our home computer is used by everyone including the housecat who is often seen walking on the keyboard. As of now, anyone can access my email messages (even the cat). Is there a way I can make my email private so that it's only available to me and no one else? If it's of any help, we have a new computer that runs Windows.
Carlos Angione
Following up with Carlos, I came to know that he is a young boy in mid teens - it's no surprise that he wants to keep his email private! I was also made to understand that his computer runs the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. Though my answer will be centred on Windows 7, I will tell you how to keep an email account confidential and a secret on other operating systems too.
But before begin, you need to understand that there are two popular methods of accessing email from a computer. The first is to use webmail interface through web browser and the second is to employ an email client such as Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail (on Windows 7). Each has its own advantages and disadvantages and the choice lies entirely upon you; hence, I will not be asking you to change the way you check email. For further reading, refer advantages of webmail and advantages of email programs like Outlook Express.

Webmail: use sign in form and browser features to keep email private

Assuming you have a webmail account from popular email service providers such as Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail, please remember the following points to keep your email private. The email account will remain a secret unless someone peers over your shoulder for which I recommend closing the door.
  • Webmail sign in : There is a 'Remember password' or equivalent feature on the sign in page of all the three popular email services. It lets you conveniently skip the sign in page and go directly to the inbox. Never use this option and ensure it is unchecked when you login.
  • Secure login: At the time of writing, both Gmail and Yahoo!Mail employ https (secure http) for subscriber login; in Hotmail, however, it is not the default - make sure you Use enhanced security when logging in.
  • Sign out each time: Even if you don't use the "Remember password" (or equivalent) feature, I suggest you sign out from your account once your work is done and close the browser window.
  • Clean browser cache and saved passwords: Paranoid about keeping your email private? Delete the browser cache and saved passwords. Remember, if you download email attachments, you have to get rid of them too.
  • Use a different web browser: Keeping your account away from others is a good way to make your email private. Thus, don't employ the same software - download a web browser for your email account. Though I suggest you install Chrome on the machine, take your pick from the big list of free web browsers.
  • Check email account secretly: No, this does not concern wearing veils or masks over your face. The Incognito mode of Google Chrome (or InPrivate browsing in Internet Explorer) lets you surf... secretly. This means the pages you visit will not be shown in the browser history and cookies will automatically be deleted once the browser window is closed.

Keep email private with a different user account on Windows 7 computer

The best way to keep email private when you check the account through software such as Windows Live Mail (default email program on Windows 7), is to create a completely new user account on the Windows 7 computer. This can be done only by the admin user - please check with the company who provided you with the machine. (It's not complicated as it sounds.) As long as you don't share the login information of this distinct user account, no one will even know you have an email address - 100% privacy!
User accounts can also be made on Windows Vista. On older versions of Windows (like XP), you have to create a new identity in Outlook Express or Outlook - whichever email program you use.

Make a password

It's really important to have a strong password for email and other online accounts. Imagine the financial losses if a hacker got into your online back account or the ignominy of having someone impersonate you on social networking web sites through your account. In this article, which has been written primarily for beginners, I shall tell you how to make a password that will protect your information and identity.
But please understand that nothing is perfect. My tips creating secure passwords and suggestions on how to take care of these are not foolproof! How you use my advice is entirely up to you! And so a dash of common sense is highly recommended.

Most registration forms require you to make a password

Generally you will be asked to make a password when you register for an account at an online service. Take the example of email accounts from Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail. The sign up forms on all the three services have fields for entering the password twice. Furthermore, a conveniently located strength bar lets you know whether the password is strong or weak.
make-password-on-gmail-hotmail-yahoo
A common question is: why do most sign up forms have two fields for making the password? The answer has more to do with human psychology than programming - typing something twice in quick succession will at least ensure that you remember it for a few minutes! Also understand that the password you enter in the two fields is not visible to anyone (including you) - the characters are replaced by a dot or an asterisk symbol.

What makes a good password?

We now come to the meat of the article. Let me start by telling you what not to have as the password.
  • Don't be foolish and put the word "password" as the password! I know at least one person who had done this.
  • Don't use the names of your spouse, children, dog, birthplace, favourite movie or song etc. This information is known to acquaintances and friends and may also be available online on your profile pages of social networking web sites like Facebook or MySpace.
  • Continuing the above point, avoid using something which is very obvious.
  • Do not make the password too short - only a few characters.
So how do you make a strong password?
A good password is one that is extremely difficult for others to guess. At the same time, it should not be so complex that even you are not able to recall after a few days (or hours!). This is what you should do (not everything listed below will be applicable for all sign up forms - be judicious when required).
  • You can have both alphabet and numbers in passwords.
  • Put in a mix of upper and lowercase letters.
  • Throw in a few symbols. These can serve either as word separators or substitutes for alphabet; such as the "@" sign for the letter "a".
  • Make the most of the allotted characters. The password strength bar is there to help you, however, don't strain yourself in trying to get that bar to hit the maximum.
Making a strong password for your online accounts (email and others) is just the beginning. To ensure online information and your identity remain safe, you need to know how to prevent account hacking by taking care of passwords which is the topic of another article - keep reading.

Google Talk Cheats

google-talk-logoWith Google Talk being all the craze right now, some people hating it, and others loving it, I figured that I would post a list of tips and tricks for those curious about the extra "features" Google implemented and has not said much about.
Registry Tweaks

You can edit most settings by opening regedit (start -> regedit),
and navigating to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk.
The "Google/Google Talk" key has several sub-keys that hold different option values:
Accounts: This one has subkeys for each different account that has logged in on the client. These keys have different values that store the username, password and connection options.
Autoupdate: Stores the current version information. When the client checks for updates it compares Google's response with these values. If an update is needed, it will download and update the new version.
Options: This is the most interesting part, where most of the current hacks should be used (keep reading).
Process: Stores the process ID. Probably used by Google Talk to detect if it's already running or not.
1.)HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\show_pin
If 1, shows a "pin" next to the minimize button that keeps the windows on top of all the other open windows when clicked.
2.)HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\view_show_taskbutton
If 0, hides the taskbar button, and leaves the tray icon only, when the window is shown
3.)HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\away_inactive
If 1, status will be set as Away after the specified number of minutes.
4.)HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\away_screensaver
If 1, status will be set as Away after the specified number of minutes.
5.)HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk\Options\inactive_minutes
Number of inactive minutes to become away if auto-away is on.
More Tips & Tricks
Change the font size - While holding the control key, move the scroll wheel on your mouse either up or down. This trick works while being focused in either the read or write area.

Insert line breaks - If you want to have a message that spans multiple paragraphs, just hold shift and hit enter. You can add as many new lines as you want to create.

Bold Text - To write something bold, you can use an asterisk before and after the word, like *this* .
Italic Text - To use italics, use an underscore before an after the word, like _this_ .

Switch windows - Hitting tab will cycle through open windows. It will select minimized conversations, to expand them just hit enter. If you just want to cycle through IM's and don't care about the buddy list, control-tab will do that and will automatically expand a minimized conversation if you settle on one.

Invitation Tips - You don’t need to say Yes or No when someone wants to add you as a friend; you can simply ignore it, the request will go away. (On the other hand, someone with whom you chat often will automatically turn to be your friend, unless you disable this in the options). ]

Show Hyperlinks - You can show your homepage or blog URL simply by entering the it in your away message (at the top of the main window). It will automatically turn to a link visible to others.
How To

Conference Calls :
What you need to do to have conference calls: Open up a copy of Google Talk on all computers with which you wish to conference. After one copy is opened make a new shortcut for Google Talk but at the end of it add /nomutex. If you installed it to the default folder then your shortcut should read "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex. Open 2nd instances of the software on every user's computer. After this start a chain: User 1 should connect on one instance to user 2. User 2 will connect on his second instance to user 3. User 3 will connect using his second instance back to user 1. With this chain everyone is connected to everyone.
Nickname & Status Message :
You can't change your nickname in a way that other people will see it change. Every nickname in the Google Talk contactlist is the part that is before @gmail.com (only the alphabetical characters are used) or the name you chosen for your GMail account. To change the nickname need to go to your Gmail account and change the name there. Choose Settings, Accounts, and then Edit info. Click on the second radio button, and enter your custom name. As a result all of your emails will have that nick as well, there is no way to seperate the two. You can add a website in your custom message, it will be clickable when someone opens a conversation window with you.
Contacts :
You don't need to say Yes or No when someone wants to add you as a friend; you can simply ignore it, the request will go away. (On the other hand, someone with whom you chat often will automatically turn to be your friend, unless you disable this).
The Gmail account 'user@gmail.com' can't be invited as your friend.
Play Music :

It's possible to broadcast music, MP3, etc.. through Google Talk.
Unplug your microphone. Double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. This will open up "Volume Control". Select "Options" and then "Properties". Then check the button next to "Recording" then click OK. You may also have to change your setting under Mixer Device. Now the Recording Control screen should be up. On my computer I selected "Wave Out Mix". Click on the green phone in Google Talk and call your friend.

Want to run Google Talk with multiple Gmail identities? If you have several Google Gmail accounts you also may want to run multiple instances of Google Talk This is especially important for families that share a single PC. Nothing worse than a family member signing you out so they can sign in under their own account!
Basically, to have "Google Polygamy" you need to run Google Talk with the following switch: /nomutex
Step 1: Right-click on the desktop
Step 2: Select New
Step 3: Select Shortcut
Step 4: Paste this into the text box:
"c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex
Step 5: Click Next and choose a shortcut name such as Google Talk1, Google Talk2, or something related to your Gmail account for easy remembering which account is which.
Step 6: Click OK a few times.

Google's Secret Command-Line Parameters
There are a few secret parameters you can add to Google Talk and make it function differently.
The most important, I think, is /nomutex, which allows you to run more than one instance of GT. Here are the others:
/nomutex: allows you to open more than one instance of Google Talk
/autostart: when Google Talk is run with this parameter, it will check the registry settings to see if it needs to be started or not. If the "Start automatically with Windows" option is unchecked, it won't start.
/forcestart: same as /autostart, but forces it to start no matter what option was set.
/S upgrade: Used when upgrading Google Talk
/register: registers Google Talk in the registry, includig the GMail Compose method.
/checkupdate: check for newer versions
/plaintextauth: uses plain authentication mechanism instead then Google's GAIA mechanism. Used for testing the plain method on Google's servers.
/nogaiaauth: disables GAIA authentication method. The same as above.
/factoryreset: set settings back to default.
/gaiaserver servername.com: uses a different GAIA server to connect to Google Talk. Used for debug purposes only, there are no other known GAIA servers.
/mailto email@host.com: send an email with Gmail
/diag: start Google Talk in diagnostic mode
/log: probably has something to do with the diagnostic logging
/unregister: ?
/embedding: ?
To add these, open up your GT shortcut, and where it says "Target:" add one or more of these inside the quotations, but after the .exe part.

How to know when the email was opened by the recipient?

Sometimes I send very important communication through email and it is imperative for me to know that the message has been opened and read. I have a Windows 7 computer and use Windows Live Mail email program. Does it have such a feature? I know Outlook Express had one and it forced the recipient to send a receipt.
Jean R. Salas
Yes, Windows Live Mail has a Receipts feature just like Outlook Express. To change the settings, go to "Tools" -> "Options" and check under the "Receipts" tab - image below.
read-receipt-know-when-email-was-opened
With a single click you can enable the read receipts option for all messages sent from Windows Live Mail. However, the eagle-eyed would have also noticed that the email client provides users with the option of never sending a read receipt! This means that read receipts are not an infallible way to know whether your email has been opened and read by the recipient because this feature can be turned off.
Use SpyPig to track messages and know when the email was opened by the recipient
spypig-email-trackingSpyPig, the free online email tracking service, embeds an image in the message. When the email is opened by the recipient, this image is downloaded from the SpyPig server and a read notification is sent to you. An account at SpyPig is not mandatory... though recommended.

OK, so this may sound like the perfect solution but unfortunately it's not! Most email clients and webmail applications will block embedded images especially from unknown senders.
Conclusion: You cannot know for certain whether your message has been opened and read by the recipient. Yes, SpyPig is a better alternative that the Read Receipt feature found on popular email program, but this too can fail if images are blocked at recipient's end.

How to put a picture in the Gmail email account

A neat way to personalize your Gmail email account is to upload a picture. Come to think of it, this customization benefits others more that you because this Gmail picture will be displayed beside your name in the contacts list on their email accounts or the Google Talk chat program.
Additionally, the same picture can also be embedded in any fancy email signature you make at Gmail. And it's not necesary to have your real photo on Gmail; put a business logo or an avatar if you so want.

Get your picture in Gmail

Please note that the instructions below have been worked out on the free Google Chrome web browser which you can download and install it for free (it's the best web browser according to me).
Important: Please make sure that you are on the standard newer Gmail webmail version to follow the steps seamlessly.
  • Login at your Gmail email account.
  • Switch to the newer webmail interface if you're on the basic HTML or older standard view. The link will be located at the bottom of the page in the footer.
  • Load the "Settings" section and move to "My Picture" segment.
  • Click "Select a picture".
  • You can put a picture in your Gmail email account by uploading one from the computer, getting it from Picasa or providing a link to one which is already online. We'll go with the first option.
  • Click the "Choose File" button.
A window opens showing the contents of the default folder on your computer's hard disk. Move to the folder that has the picture you want to upload on Gmail.
  • Select the file and click "Open" .
  • Patiently wait for the file to be transferred to Gmail servers. Depending on the image size and the internet speed this can take anywhere from a couple of seconds to a minute.
  • Once uploaded, the image is displayed with a superimposed selection box. Drag the corners and / or move the box to select the image area that you want to be displayed. This is akin to cropping the picture. Gmail also conveniently shows a preview.
  • Once satisfied, click "Apply Changes" button [Slide 9] which will put the picture on your Gmail email account [Slide 10].
By the way, those conscious of privacy (in the times of Facebook??? ha ha), can also choose to have the image displayed only to the people they chat with.

Change Gmail email password

Gmail email box, like other online accounts, is kept secure and private by the password. It is very important that this is known only to you. If the password falls into the wrong hands you can probably kiss the email account goodbye resulting in the loss of vital, personal and sensitive information. As you can understand, this can actually spell doom for many people.
The stronger the Gmail email password the better is the account security?
Creating a good password for your Gmail email is an art. The password needs to be sufficiently complex but not so much that you aren't able to recall it yourself at some later date. At the same time, it cannot be something that others can guess in a few tries. I suggest reading my tips on how to make a good password for your Gmail account.
Since the strength of the password determines the security of your account, Gmail, like other popular services, helpfully provides a "Password Strength" bar whenever you want to change this information.
How to change the Gmail email password
Below are step-by-step instructions and screenshots on changing the Gmail email account password. These have been worked out from the new webmail interface of the service.
  • Login at your Gmail account and click the "Settings" link (top-right).
  • Move to the "Accounts and Import" tab .
  • Scroll down to the "Change account settings" section and click the "Google Account Settings" link .
  • A new browser window / tab will open .
  • Locate the "Change password" link and click on it .
  • You now need to provide the current password of your Gmail account or answer the security question (more on this below).
  • Type in the new password twice - once in each of the blank fields - and keep an eye on the password strength bar .
  • Hit the "Save" button to confirm the changes and modify the account password information.
What is the Gmail email account security question?
Google understands that some people may forget the password to their Gmail email account. If this happens, the subscriber may lose the account and all the information stored in it. Users are, thus, provided with a way to regain control of the Gmail account by resetting the password. This is typically done by answering the security question one had selected / created at the time of getting the Gmail email address.
Conclusion: It's quite easy to change the Gmail email account password if one knows the answer to the security question or has access to the present login information. Which means the security question and its answer are as important as the password.

Email

Email - How does it work? Email client and programs
Email is the most used application on the Internet. Emails allow users to communicate with each other almost instantly. Daily millions of emails are sent from one part of the globe to the other. You can receive and send emails from all systems whether it is a Windows PC or a Unix machine (even my cell phone allows me to send one!). Employing MIME, you can send video, pictures or sounds along with text messages via email.
Each email account has a unique address. A general format for an email address is:
Your-name@some-computer-name
where 'your-name' is your username you use to log at the email server. This is followed by a '@' sign and the name of the computer (or the domain name, if you like) on which your email service resides. A few examples would be:
manish@mydomain.com
manish@mywebsite.com

With hundreds of companies offering free online email accounts, getting an email address is now very easy and free! Want to send mails from Windows? Go ahead and create an email account and get on the Internet bandwagon.
An email message consists of a header and a body. The email header has the following information:
  • Recipient email address
  • Senders email address
  • Email address of the people to whom a carbon copy (Cc) and blind carbon copy (Bcc) is been sent.
  • The subject line
The main email message resides in the email body.
Emails can be sent by typing the recipients' email address in the 'Send to' field. Any additional recipients can be specified using the Cc or the Bcc.

Email Clients

Your email account would typically reside on a remote computer. Email clients are programs that download emails from the remote server and store them on your computer. This saves online time as you can download all emails at one go, close the Internet connection and read the mails at leisure. Email clients also help you to compose messages offline; whether it's a new email you are writing or a reply. On subsequent connection to the Internet you can instruct the client to send the emails you have written.
My favorite email client (on Windows) is Microsoft Outlook Express because it's very easy to use and comes free with the Internet Explorer browser but you can pick one you like from the list of email programs.
A good email client has the following features.
  • Ability to send and receive email quickly.
  • An address book in which you can store email addresses of your friends, family members and others.
  • The ability to easily attach other non-text based files using MIME. You can, thus, send pictures, sounds etc. with your email.
  • Add signatures to outgoing emails.
